Speed reductions, new parking rules among changes in Traffic Bylaw

Caledon’s roads have some new rules.

On June 25, Caledon Council approved a new traffic bylaw with a goal of increasing road safety and addressing mobility needs.

Domenica D’Amico, Caledon’s Commissioner of Engineering, Public Works, and Transportation, said the bylaw will enhance the safety and efficiency of Caledon’s transportation network.

“It provides a modern and clear framework for managing traffic flow, providing a safer environment for bicyclists and pedestrians and improves enforcement capabilities to provide an overall better level of service for residents,” said D’Amico.

The new bylaw introduces speed reductions of up to 20 kilometres per hour on 34 road segments across Caledon.

It’s also introducing new special enforcement areas on scenic routes where there are existing “No Parking” and “No Stopping” signs — fines for these infractions will now be higher.

The new bylaw will prohibit overhanging parking on sidewalks, crosswalks, and curb lines.

Caledon’s previous traffic bylaw was enacted in 2015 and established specific parking restrictions, traffic controls on Town-owned roads, and offences for the enforcement of the bylaw.

In a statement, Town of Caledon communications staff said industry knowledge, best practices, and mobility options have all evolved since 2015. Combining these factors with the significant urban development in Caledon, staff felt it was necessary to update Caledon’s traffic bylaw to address the needs of a mixed rural and urban community — so that the bylaw will still be an effective tool for enforcement.

Staff said it will take a while to start enforcement of the new bylaw; it will begin in the coming months once fines are set and available for Caledon’s bylaw officers to use. Communications staff said more updates will be provided to residents as Caledon works to implement the new traffic bylaw approved by Caledon Council on June 25.

In the media release, staff said the new bylaw includes accommodations for many forms of active and eco-friendly transport like e-bikes, e-scooters, roller skates, cargo bikes and skateboards.

The bylaw includes provisions to regulate pedestrian and cyclist traffic on sidewalks, bicycle paths, and multi-use paths. Staff said provisions to make bike lanes safer are also in the bylaw.
