Motionball event raises more than $30,000 for Special Olympics

On September 12, motionball sports held its 5th annual Marathon of Sport Caledon event in partnership with the Special Olympics Canada Foundation.

It was a day packed with many activities and games for all to enjoy.

Many members of the community joined in and played a variety of games, including basketball, benchball, soccer, ultimate giant pong, and many more.

Each group was paired with up to two local Special Olympics athletes that competed alongside each group throughout the day.

Special Olympics athlete Savannah was one of the participants who got the chance to show off her skills with her team, especially when playing soccer, the sport she competed in during the Special Olympics.

“My favourite game was basketball”, says Savannah. “I scored a basket”.

Mellissa, a member of the Sports Corp team, participated for the first time at the Marathon of Sport Caledon event and was teamed up with Savannah.

“It’s great. We saw some familiar faces that we knew, that was fun, and everybody’s been great. friendly and even though you’re competing, they still high-five you, and, overall, we had a great time,” says Mellissa

In addition to the numerous activities that were at the event, participants also took part in the #NoGoodWay rotation where motionball is working to promote positivity and inclusion, demonstrating that there is No Good Way to use the “r-word”.

This year Motionball Caledon was able to raise $31,000 in support of the Special Olympic athletes Worldwide.

“It was really good to hear about how many people are donated. It was because it is something that still needs people to want to have Special Olympic activities for. It’s good to see how many people are donating and how much money they can raise,” said first time motionball participant Alessia.

Looking back at the successful event many participants had a lot of fun and are looking forward to coming back next year.

“Motionball is definitely an activity and an event that needs to continue in the future because it’s just for everyone. It’s not excluding anyone, it’s definitely accessible, and inclusive, so, I think it’s definitely an important event and more people should come out and try it,” said participant Victoria.
