Being the best at anything isn’t easy; it takes hard work, commitment, and a competitive edge.

Being the best in an entire country, let alone the world, seems impossible.

Some names synonymous with being the best at what they do are Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, NBA Champion Michael Jordan, and Michelin star record-holding chef Alain Ducasse.

Well, add Caledon’s own Tav Schembri to that list.

For nearly a decade Schembri has been a staple in Peel Region as a real estate agent with RE/MAX, operating RE/MAX Specialists Tavsells Inc. located on Hurontario Street in Inglewood.

In that time, he’s won numerous awards and was named a member of the RE/MAX Hall of Fame in 2015. In 2021 he took it to the next level by being named not only the top RE/MAX agent in Canada, but the best in the entire world.

“In the short eight years we went from never being in real estate to being number one in the world with RE/MAX,” Schembri said. “I’m in awe now, I can’t believe it and I’m getting a lot of emails and calls from around the world to congratulate me. When we do get together it’s in Vegas and you get to meet a lot of people, so they’ve been reaching out and they’re happy for me.”

Loving what he does has helped to make Schembri so successful, and despite jumping into the real estate game as a new career a handful of years ago, he hit the ground running which set him up to achieve bigger and bigger goals down the road.

“It’s been a lot of fun along the way,” he said. “Ever since I started, it hasn’t really felt like work. My first deal was the largest deal ever in the history of Brampton—I didn’t even know what it meant at the time, but now I understand it—my first deal was $53 million. That had never been done before and from that point on my business took off. Slowly I rose through the rankings to being top 100 in Canada and then I went into a commercial venture with RE/MAX, and I was 13th worldwide and top five in Canada. After that, I went into residential—the highest level is diamond—and I’ve been a diamond recipient five out of my seven years.”

Location is a key factor to having this type of success in real estate and Schembri believes he’s in the prime spot as more and more people are looking to head to Caledon because of its beauty and everything it has to offer as it continues to grow.

“I’ve always looked at Caledon as the Hollywood of Canada,” he said. “Our proximity to Toronto and to the airport is really important, we’re in a prime location. Our growth here in Caledon has been faster than in most parts of Canada—the farmland has become development land—and there’s been a big push for real estate in the area.”

Although it’s his name atop the rankings, Schembri isn’t one to take all the credit; he points to the team around him and how they work so well as a cohesive unit to find success in Caledon and Peel.
