Two local Caledon firefighters, Jessie Di Giovanni and Jack Rooney, have been honoured with a 2024 Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery for a heroic rescue that took place last year.
The Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery was created in 1976 and honours firefighters who have gone above and beyond to protect and serve their communities, and honours acts of outstanding courage.
On August 17, 2024, Firefighters Di Giovanni and Rooney were driving on Highway 410 near Mississauga when they spotted a vehicle overturned in a flooded trench, with bystanders nearby calling for help, said the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Edith Dumont.
Di Giovanni and Rooney then entered the murky water and inspected the submerged car, where Rooney was able to locate the unconscious driver.
Unfortunately, the victim was stuck.
Di Giovanni dove back into the water and was able to unbuckle the seatbelt and adjust the seat.
With help from an arriving OPP officer, they shifted the vehicle enough for Di Giovanni to free the driver.
“Di Giovanni and Rooney acted swiftly and selflessly in a life-threatening situation,” reads the Ontario Government citation.
