The Alton resident was appointed Town Crier in 2011.
The staff report to council stated the Crier’s role is ceremonial, opening public events, etc., in his garb from the 18th century.
Welch’s contract with the Town provides for a fee of $150 per event, with an annual maximum of $750.
He is a member of the Ontario Guild of Town Criers, and he actively competes, placing fifth in the Guild’s Provincial Championship. He was also first at the Marshville Heritage Festival Town Crier Competition in 2013. He is also the Town Crier for Erin, and the staff report said he attends a number of events for which he is not reimbursed.
“Mr. Welch has represented the Town at various events in both an official and unofficial capacity, and has done so is a professional and respectable manner,” the report stated.
