Caledon council recently voted to extend his contract without comment. The Alton resident was appointed Town Crier in 2011. The staff report to council stated the Crier's role is ceremonial, opening public events, etc., in his garb from the 18th century. Welch's contract with the Town provides for a fee of $150 per event, with an annual maximum of $750. He is a member of the Ontario Guild of Town Criers, and he actively competes, placing fifth in the Guild's Provincial Championship.He was also first at the Marshville Heritage Festival Town Crier Competition in 2013.
