The community gathered around at the Bolton Kin Club on the morning of September 14 to run, walk, crawl, or wheel through the annual Terry Fox Run.

“You’re not going to get a better role model than Terry Fox,” John Stegeman, member of the Bolton Kin, told the crowd gathered around before the Run.

“Some of us are here to walk for our neighbor, for our family members, think about them. Think about that,” Stegeman continued.

The Kin Club led the way around a 1km route along the Humber River.

Attendees were invited to run it once or ten times, or more.

One special aspect of this year’s Kin Terry Fox Run was the participation of local groups and teams from the kids.

The Caledon Hawks Youth 16 BB team raised over $1,000 for the run, more than double what they had set out to raise.

They came together as a team to participate in the run.

Natalia attended the run, adorned in her Girl Guides uniform.

She shared she was participating that day with her group in support of Terry Fox.

Her mother, Josie, attended in her support.

“It feels nice to be able to support her in something that she feels passionate about and that she wants to do,” she said.

Mayor Annette Groves addressed the fact that there were so many young people in attendance that day, both there in teams and with their families.

“It’s so nice to see the young people. Thank you, guys, for participating and for being community people and community champions because you are our future,” said Mayor Groves.

“I’m sure every one of us here has a loved one or knows someone that’s been touched by cancer and it’s a horrible, horrible disease. But thank God that we have heroes like Terry Fox who was bold enough, brave enough, kind enough, compassionate enough to raise the awareness, to raise funds for individuals struggling with cancer.”

In addition to young children participating this year, some returned year after year.

Doreen Huard has attended the Terry Fox Run every year since 1989. On this, the 45th anniversary of the event, she brought her Terry Fox Poster, covered in stickers from every year she has participated.

Stegeman said over the 45 years of this annual run, the Bolton Kin has raised half a million dollars.

This year, they were able to donate $20,000 with over 125 attendees.

Stegeman said it’s great they can continue to do this every year.

“The whole country comes together on this day to remember Terry, but also to support cancer research so that’s the important thing,” said Stegeman.

“It’s important because we have a young gentleman who had a dream who wanted to run across Canada to bring awareness to the rest of the country about cancer and I think it behooves us as Kin, as a Canadian service club, to make sure that you know we bring that dream to Bolton.”
