Residents interested in making Caledon a more accessible space for all may want to join an advisory committee for which the Town is recruiting members.
On August 6, the Town of Caledon announced it was seeking dedicated residents interested in using their knowledge and experience to serve the community on its Accessibility Advisory Committee.
Residents can apply to be a part of the committee on the Town of Caledon’s website, caledon.ca. Anyone who requires assistance with the application process is encouraged to call 905-584-2272 extension 2366 or email agenda@caledon.ca.
Applications to the committee are being accepted until 4:30 p.m. on September 13 and the committee will begin meeting this fall.
Steven Dickson, Caledon’s Commissioner of Corporate Services and Chief Legal Officer, said Caledon is committed to inclusivity and establishing an environment that’s open and accessible to all residents and visitors.
“This committee will play a key role in ensuring every voice across Caledon is heard so we can continue to address barriers and empower all members of our community to live their life to the best of their ability,” said Dickson.
Caledon’s Accessibility Advisory Committee will be tasked with raising awareness in the community about individuals with disabilities. The committee will also make recommendations on accessibility for Caledon Council to consider.
The committee will focus on the review of site plans, playgrounds, and community parks and ensure they meet the standards outlined in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
According to a Town of Caledon news release, the following will also be duties of the committee: advising Council on matters pertaining to accessibility for persons with disabilities; advising and informing Council of new legislation and funding initiatives; advising and developing working relationships with relevant groups and individuals; advising and assisting with the development of education programs; promoting the activities of the committee; advising and informing Council with regard to accessibility issues as they arise; and assisting in the creation and annual review of Caledon’s Multi-Year Accessibility Plan.
