Three more cases of WNV found in Mississauga

Peel Public Health has wrapped up this year’s surveillance program against West Nile Virus (WNV) by announcing three more human cases of the disease were found in the last week (ending Sept. 30).
This brought the total of human cases found in Peel this year to five, and all of them were in Mississauga.
The surveillance program, which started in June resulted in 63 mosquito pools testing positive for WNV. Of that, there were 40 in Brampton and 23 in Mississauga. There were none in Caledon.
There were 208 WNV-positive mosquito batches found in Ontario, and 44 reported cases of the illness reported from Hamilton, Ottawa, Durham Region, Haldimand-Norfolk, Halton Region, Niagara Region, Peel Region, Toronto), Windsor-Essex County and York Region.
As well, there were four human cases of WNV in Alberta, 17 in Manitoba, six in Quebec and one in Saskatchewan. There have been positive mosquito batches in Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan.
To date, there are 1,162 human cases of WNV in the United States; with 46 states reporting WNV activity.
