Plans to divert traffic from Belfountain shelved

It seems there’s going to be no police effort to discourage traffic from passing through Belfountain this weekend or next.
Councillor Barb Shaughnessy said a pilot project that was going to be tried this weekend and Thanksgiving has been put off for this year. She added a meeting was planned between representatives of the Town and the business community in the hamlet for yesterday (Wednesday). The results were not known at press time.
The West Caledon Visitor Traffic Management Committee had come up with an idea that police would be encouraging traffic on Forks of the Credit Road, heading west from Highway 10, to go north on Mississauga Road, thus bypassing the hamlet. The idea was to reduce traffic congestions, which was feared, considering the number of tourists expected in the area this time of year to take in the fall colours. People who indicated they wanted to go into Belfountain would have been allowed to proceed.
But local business operators, including Garth Turner, who owns Belfountain General Store, were worried this was going to impact on commercial operations during some of the busiest weekends of the year.
Turner was pleased with the prospect of the meeting.
“Finally, some consultation will take place!” he declared, as he praised Mayor Allan Thompson for stepping in. “We’re hoping to be actually listened to.”
