Event planned to mark Guy Fawkes Day

The Orangeville Fairgrounds with be the place to be this Saturday (Nov. 5) as local organizers are bringing a little history and a family, fun night of fireworks and British fare.
This will be a night for adults and kids to enjoy, marking Guy Fawkes Day. It will run from 4 to 8 p.m.
Come at 4 p.m. and make a mini Guy to have thrown on the bon fire. At 5:15, the kids can join a parade to the fire with their Guys to have it tossed on the fire (or take him home if you really like him). At 5:30, the big Guy will go up in the bon fire pit. As soon as it’s really dark (about 7 p.m.), there will be a fantastic, not to be missed, fireworks display by DW Fireworks. From 4 until 8, there will be British fare brought by The Feisty Jack catering truck, along with hot drinks and deserts.
In 1605, 13 young men planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Among them was Fawkes, Britain’s most notorious traitor.
But as the group worked on the plot, it became clear that innocent people would be hurt or killed in the attack, including the King (James I). One of the group members sent an anonymous letter warning to stay away from the Parliament Nov. 5. The warning letter reached the King, and the King’s forces made plans to stop the conspirators.
Fawkes, who was in the cellar of the Parliament with the 36 barrels of gunpowder when the authorities stormed it in the early morning hours, was arrested and later executed.
On the very night that the Gunpowder Plot was foiled, bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the King. Since then, Nov. 5 has become known as Bonfire Night. The event is commemorated every year with fireworks and burning effigies of Fawkes on a bonfire.
