Peel Regional representatives recently accepted the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2013 budget from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).
“We are pleased to have been recognized by the GFOA for this award for meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting,” said Regional Chair and CEO Emil Kolb. “The Region is committed to producing a budget which is fiscally responsible and which demonstrates accountability and transparency in budget reporting.”
To receive the award, budget documents had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation and how well an organization’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device. Submissions are reviewed by a GFOA review committee of professionals with expertise in financial reporting.
“Comprehensive financial reporting, which discloses how local programs and services are funded, is the cornerstone of good government,” said Caledon Councillor Richard Whitehead, chair of the audit committee of Regional council. “This award is a testament to a Regional budget process that was fiscally responsible and more accessible to our residents.”
The Government Finance Officers Association is a non-profit professional association serving more than 17,800 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.
