The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s two-day tournament at Osprey Valley Golf Course in Alton last weekend played out in the wet and cold of Aug. 16, which fortunately turned Aug. 17 with weather perfect for great scoring conditions.
“Osprey was in fantastic shape and proved to be a good challenge for all of our players,” said MJT Tournament Director Mike Skimson. “We had some great battles in each of the four divisions through the rain and wind, and then on day two only Jack Quirke was able to maintain his lead in the Junior Boys 17-19 and win. All the other winners came from behind.”
Jack Quirke, 17, of Waterloo, fired back-to-back rounds of 74 for a 148 total, winning low overall and the MJT Junior title over both Devin Bartlett, 17, of Cambridge, (77 and 75 for 152) and Jason Kerr, 19, of Pattaya, Thailand (76 and 76 for 152).
In the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 division, Dennis Weber, 15, of Ancaster, pulled ahead of the pack to win his first title with fine rounds of 74 and 76 (150), holding off runner-up Nathan Douglas, 14, of Thornhill, (79 and 75 for 154), by four strokes. Third spot on the podium went to Trevor Corner, 16, of Mississauga, who shot 79 and 76 (155).
It took a playoff to decide the MJT Bantam Boys 14 and under title after both Angelo Giantsopoulos, 14, of Richmond Hill, (78 and 74 for 152) and Ewan MacBain, 14, of Toronto, (77 and 75 for 152) tied for the lead after 36 holes. Giantsopolous won on the first playoff hole. Vince Greco, 14, of Bolton, came third in the division (81 and 74 for 155).
Sydney Shaw, 17, of Orchard Park, NY, made the trip to the tournament worth her while with a stellar closing round of 77 to win the MJT Girls division by two strokes (89 and 77 for 166) over Elanna Lachaine-DeMarchi, 17, of Cambridge (86 and 82 for 168). Cynthia Zhao, 14, of Toronto, came in third with scores of 87 and 82 (169).
Winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Lachaine-DeMarchi, Greco, Myles Schulz of Orangeville and Devin Bartlett of Cambridge. Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Cynthia Zhao, Alex Wyndham-West of King City, Nathan Douglas of Thornhill and Hayden Edworthy of Cambridge. Golf Town Comeback Awards for best second day improvement in score went to Sydney Shaw, Alexander Turchan of Conestogo, Evan Aikens-Armbruster of Waterloo, Cooper Trew of Midhurst.
