Osler celebrates the end of construction on Peel Memorial with Minister Eric Hoskins, local MPPs and other dignitaries

William Osler Health System recently celebrated the most momentous milestone to date in the journey toward the opening of the new Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.
Joined by Health and Long-Term Care Minister Eric Hoskins and other dignitaries and donors, Osler recognized the end of construction on the new outpatient hospital, and looked ahead to the public opening in February 2017.
“The substantial completion milestone of the new Peel Memorial means we are now closer to completing this project,” Brampton West MPP Vic Dhillon commented. “Once the new state-of-the-art Peel Memorial outpatient hospital opens in a few months from now, the community can look forward to a new kind of health care facility; one that not only treats illness and injuries, but also helps people stay well.”
Peel Memorial will focus on treatment of patients who do not require an overnight stay in hospital. It will offer an extensive number of specialty and day clinics, health services and programs focused on the unique needs of seniors, children, people requiring mental health services, and individuals living with chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma.
“This is an exciting time for the people of Brampton and the surrounding area,” Osler Board Chair Vanita Varma said. “The new Peel Memorial is giving us a chance to lead the way in the province, serving as a state-of-the-art outpatient hospital that will meet the increasing health care needs of our families, while changing our health system by focusing on health, wellness and prevention of illness and chronic disease.”
The main service areas at the new Peel Memorial include:
• An Urgent Care Centre — open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., every day, and staffed by emergency-trained physicians and staff.
• Outpatient Procedures/Day Surgery — including cataract and arthroscopic surgery, and minor gynaecology procedures.
• Chronic Disease Management — education and support to help people with chronic health issues (such as diabetes, cardiovascular or kidney disease) to manage their condition.
• Community Mental Health and Addictions Services — including an eating disorders clinic, addictions counselling and seniors’ behavioural support.
• Specialized clinics — for prenatal education, maternal and newborn care, gynaecological and obstetrical services, and services for children and adolescents.
• Seniors’ Wellness — geriatric assessment clinics, preventative care and rehabilitation services, all focused on maintaining independence.
• Diagnostic Services — including x-ray, mammography, ultrasound, CT scans, bone mineral density tests and laboratory services.
• A Dialysis Unit — with the capacity to accommodate up to 36 patients a day.
“A new and innovative approach to the delivery of health care services, Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness truly represents the vision and support of an entire community,” Central West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) Chair Maria Britto commented. “Today is their day. Today is about those who will benefit from the offerings of this impressive new facility.”
At Peel Memorial, partnerships with other leading health organizations and complementary health providers will make it easier for patients to get the care they need, when and where they need it most. Open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Peel Memorial’s Urgent Care Centre will alleviate pressures on the emergency department at Brampton Civic Hospital and provide patients with a more convenient alternative.
“Fighting for healthcare in Brampton has been part of my DNA for more than 12 years,” said Brampton Mayor Linda Jeffrey. “It has been a really long journey and I am proud to have been a part of this project from its infancy to completion.”
With the first phase of the project focusing on outpatient-based care, the second and an overlapping partnership phase at Peel will add inpatient beds and provides for even greater access to services. With Peel directly connected to a tertiary acute hospital at Brampton Civic, these two facilities will also work seamlessly in increasing access to the services needed by the community.
“Today’s announcement is a tremendous milestone for this community, and something that Osler staff, physicians and volunteers have been committed to for years,” Osler interim president and CEO Joanne Flewwelling said. “When the new Peel Memorial opens to the public in February 2017, it will improve access to important health services that people in our region rely on most, and provide more options for the hundreds of thousands of patients who receive care and treatment at Osler sites each year.”
Osler is offering the community an opportunity to take a sneak peek at the new facility through upcoming public tours: Nov. 19 and 20, and Dec. 3 and 4 from 10 a.m to 2 p.m.
The new Peel Memorial is located at 20 Lynch St. in Brampton. Parking is free during the community tours and no pre-registration is required.
