Local dentistry offers therapeutic Botox treatment to patients

Smiles on Queen Dentistry is a husband and wife dentist team that provides therapeutic Botox, a relatively new service in the dentist industry, along with a wide array of dental and cosmetic services.

The dentistry opened on December 4, 2017, and is run by Doctor Hedy Norsen and her husband Doctor Lawrence Hung, who looked for a community with a strong identity, where they want to grow.

“We want to basically get old here,” said Dr. Norsen. Both graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry in 2013 with a Doctorate in Dental Surgery. “We want to see the kids, grow up with the kids, and grow that way.”

Speaking to the Citizen, Dr. Norsen said therapeutic Botox is a newer thing, but they don’t do cosmetic Botox, just cosmetic lip filler. “What we do is basically loosen the muscles.”

She says most patients who come in for the Botox are chronic pain patients, related to tension headaches, jaw joints, and joint disorder, those who have tried other options. They inject Botox into muscles that deal with chewing, the back of the neck and head. “Anything that will create that tension headache chronic pain issue.”

She added that all of this has been approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the regulatory college for medical doctors in Ontario, as therapeutic Botox is a natural thing. “We’re dealing with the muscles of the jaw every single day. Were injecting every single day. If a cosmetic injector and a nurse can do it, obviously a dentist could.”

Dr. Norsen says she has always loved health care, but also enjoys working with her hands. “I’m a pianist, I draw, I paint, so the hands on things really excite me.” She specializes in cosmetic dentistry as it’s a “natural thing for me,” since health care and hands go together.

She said she enjoys and does more of the cosmetics part while her husband does the surgical.

Dr. Norsen recalled when she was little, she didn’t like going to the dentist at first, but eventually didn’t mind it because she was more terrified of getting needles from a doctor than dealing with a dentist.

She said when they first opened, they didn’t really know the community, but now feel “more like we are a bit of a part of it,” as they know the families and kids better.

She added they now “click” with Bolton and really enjoys the demographic.
