Editorial — Think of worthy volunteers for the Town to recognize

December 5, 2013   ·   0 Comments

Volunteers make up a big part of life in Caledon, and that is seldom more apparent than at this time of year.
This coming weekend will see numerous celebrations of the holidays, including two Santa Claus Parades, a ceremonial tree lighting and numerous other activities, many of which are volunteer driven.
We are also right in the middle of the time of year for celebrating with food and drink, and that is sometimes done to excess. Fortunately, there are volunteers who are taking part in the Home James program, which is aimed at getting people, their vehicles and their passengers home safely, and in an non-judgemental atmosphere.
Perhaps it’s coincidental, but maybe not. We received a media release from the Town of Caledon earlier this week, announcing that nominations are being accepted for the 2014 Caledon Volunteer and Citizen Achievement Awards.
This awards program is aimed at recognizing the contributions that are freely given by people who are mainly interested in making things better in the community, whether they be people who organize parades, coach kids’ athletic teams or help get their neighbours home after they have had a bit too much to drink.
There’s lots of time to nominate. Nominations close Feb. 1, and the actual awards will be presented in April.
But there is no better time than the present to start thinking of worthy recipients.
There are lots of them around.
Nomination forms and details of the award criteria may be obtained from the Town of Caledon website at www.caledon.ca/recreation or at a local recreation centre.
