Celebration for retiring judge

Colleagues, friends and family joined together recently to celebrate Justice Douglas B. Maund, who is stepping down as a Justice of the Ontario Court at Orangeville.
Hosted by the Dufferin County Law Association, the event was seen as an opportunity to reflect on a career dedicated to the community.
A graduate of Carleton University in Ottawa and Queen’s University in Kingston, Maund was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1977 and began practicing with the former firm of Parkinson, Parkinson and Maund, with an emphasis on criminal and family law. During his practice, he also acted as Assistant Crown Attorney in Criminal Code prosecutions in Dufferin, Halton, Peel and York Regions, as well as the Crown Counsel in federal prosecutions under the Narcotics Control Act, Canada Labour Code and Aeronautics Act in Dufferin and Peel.
Not restricting his practice, he was children’s counsel for more than two decades, acting in custody and child welfare cases on behalf of the Office of the Children’s Lawyer, as well as being a panel lawyer for Family Transition Place for many years, instructing intake workers and counsellors on family law issues in relation to domestic violence.
In 1991, Maund temporarily left the practice to become the Chief of Staff to the Ministers of Communications, External Affairs and National Health and Welfare in Ottawa, returning in 1993 to work as a mediator and later again as a litigator before being appointed Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice at Orangeville. While on the bench, Maund has acted as the Local Administrative Justice at Orangeville, as designated by the Regional Senior Justice of Central West Region.
Notwithstanding his busy legal career, Maund has been very active in the local community, working on the boards of various organizations such as the Big Brothers Association of Dufferin & District, Steering Committee for Family Transition Place and Theatre Orangeville, as well as serving on the Board of Governors of the former Dufferin Area Hospital and the first Capital Fundraising Campaign for the current Headwaters healthcare facility, amongst other activities.
