William Osler Health System’s McMaster Family Medicine residents headed out into Brampton and Etobicoke recently to provide the community with helpful information about preventive screening for three different types of cancer — breast, colorectal and cervical.
Ten medical residents from the McMaster/William Osler Health System Family Medicine Teaching Centre participated in three education sessions as part of a Residents Give Back to the Community event.
“Our program recognizes the importance of reaching out to the communities we serve in a way that helps educate people about important health issues such as cancer screening,” said Dr. Brian Klar, site director at the McMaster/William Osler Health System Family Medicine Teaching Centre. “At the same time, this dialogue helps us as health care providers better understand the needs of some of our vulnerable populations and the barriers to their care.”
Since 2008, Osler has been a family medicine teaching centre through a partnership with McMaster University. This two-year program provides medical residents with the opportunity to gain a variety of health care learning experiences at both Brampton Civic Hospital and Etobicoke General Hospital. This experience includes delivery of more than 100 babies as part of their obstetrical rotation.
“These presentations offered a great opportunity to discuss important issues pertaining to cancer screening, which is something we hope session participants will choose to undergo and encourage their loved ones to do the same,” said Dr. Amrit Singh, co-chief resident of the McMaster Family Medicine Program. “We are looking forward to fostering an ongoing relationship between the McMaster/William Osler Health System Family Medicine Teaching team and the community through additional outreach programs in the time to come.”
Sessions were delivered in Brampton at India Rainbow Community Services and Punjabi Community Health Services. In Etobicoke, the group of residents delivered education at Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services. The sessions were organized by Osler’s Diversity Services team.
