It was a case of the poor getting richer dung the last evening of regular season play in the Caledon Senior Hockey League March 13.
The top three teams in the standings all lost their matches, enabling the other three clubs to close the gap a bit.
Yale Industrial Trucks wrapped up the regular-season championship, even though they couldn’t manage so much as a goal in their final game.
Thanks to an upset 6-3 win by fifth-place Fines Ford Lincoln over second-place Jiffy Lube Oilers, Yale was able to hang on to its two-point first-place lead even though they were blanked 4-0 by Bolton Chiropractic Centre. The other game at Don Sheardown Memorial Arena also saw an upset, as sixth-place Heart Lake Insurance knocked off Rutherford Global Logistics 7-5.
Yale ended the campaign with 32 points, followed by the Oilers with 30, Rutherford with 27, the Chiropractic centre with 26, Fines Ford with 16 and Heart Lake with 13.
The round-robin playoffs was to begin Mar. 20 at Sheardown Arena.
Bolton Chiropractic 4, Yale 0
Ted Callighen led the way for the Bonebenders with a goal and an assist.
Also stepping up with two points was Stefan Pacula with two assists. The other goals were scored by John Crossley, Rod Sinclair and Dom D’Orazio. Team sponsor Mike Shore, Dave Smith and Nick Taccogna had one assist each. Goaltender Pat DiFrancesco, who doubles as CSHL president, posted the shutout.
Fines Ford 6, Jiffy Lube 3
Jim Rogers was the top trigger-man for Fines with two goals and an assist.
Tony Curcio and Jamie Hardman both registered a goal and an assist. John Pallotta and Bill Mackenzie scored the other goals. Joe Palumbo had one assist.
Mike Lo Dico scored twice for Jiffy Lube with Peter Coghill getting the other goal. Pete McNamara had two helpers with singles going to Gary Hughes and Frank Cirone.
Heart Lake 7, Rutherford 5
Victor Marrelli was on fire for Heart Lake with four goals and three assists.
Jack Gibson also had a big night with two goals and two assists. Ageless Bob McHardy posted a goal and an assist. Joe (The Barber) Guaragna notched two assists with Bill Davis, George Armstrong and Luch Pinarello getting one each.
Greg Frangakis and Rich Petrie led Rutherford with two goals each. Garry Hoxey had a goal and an assist. Dom Spignesi led the assists parade with two while one each went to Jim Horan, Jim Sabaziotis, Steve Tarasco, Mike Gasparini and Dan Tasson.
