Town seeking torch bearers for Pan Am Games relay

November 20, 2014   ·   0 Comments

The Town of Caledon is asking residents and business owners to nominate a torchbearer to run the torch through Caledon during the Pan American Games Torch Relay.
Caledon is one leg of a 41-day journey spanning 130 Canadian communities that will celebrate the Pan Am spirit.
There are six nomination categories to choose from, representing arts and culture; age 60 plus; sports; unsung hero community member; emerging resident; and youth.
Mandatory requirements for bearers is they must be 13 years of age as of May 30, 2015; must be a Caledon resident or Caledon business owner; and have a willingness to contribute to the Caledon community.
Go to www.caledon.ca/torch to apply.
The contest closes at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 12. The selection committee has the right to withdraw nominations that do not fit the criteria or transfer nominations from one category to another. The TO2015 Caledon selection committee will review all nominations Jan. 8 and selected torchbearers will be notified by Jan. 30.
There will be 3,000 torchbearers participating in the 41-day journey starting in May 2015 with the traditional Aztec lighting ceremony at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico. The Canadian journey for the flame will start with its arrival in Toronto May 30. It will then travel to the five other Canadian cities — Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal, Halifax and the Greater Vancouver Area — and more than 130 Ontario communities, including the Town of Caledon, towards the lighting of the cauldron July 10 during the Opening Ceremony in downtown Toronto.
Along with the Caledon community torchbearer nomination process, community members have the opportunity to register to be one of 3,000 torchbearers through TORONTO2015’s random draw. To help kick off the search for torchbearers last month, TO2015 named its first honorary torchbearer: famed Canadian astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield.
