Caledon East residents who have ideas on how to improve the Airport Road corridor in their community have an opportunity to share them with the Town and influence their community’s future.

Recently, the Town of Caledon announced that it is conducting a “Streetscape and Urban Design Study of the Airport Road corridor within Caledon East from approximately Cranston Drive to approximately Huntsmill Drive.”

One of the first steps in this process involves getting community feedback from a survey that is now live on the Town’s community engagement website at haveyoursaycaledon.ca.

According to the Town, its Caledon East project will be incorporated into a larger Region of Peel Airport Road Reconstruction Project that is already underway.

The Region of Peel’s role is to improve safety on the road and sidewalks, while Caledon’s role is to provide direction for streetscape design and long-term planning on Airport Road.

In September 2021, the Region announced it had completed an environmental assessment from 100 metres North of King Street to 300 metres North of Huntsmill Drive on Airport Road in Caledon.

According to the Region, the study examined “alternative solutions and design concepts to address long-term issues related to planned future growth, enhance the safety of the Airport Road corridor, and promote infrastructure improvements that facilitate walking and cycling.”

Recommendations from that completed study include the following: reduced lane widths throughout most of the study corridor; roundabouts at Castlederg Side Road-Boston Mills Road and Cranston Drive; layby parking with streetscaping from the Caledon Trailway to Walker Road; a combination of multi-use paths and sidewalks in urban areas and paved shoulders in rural areas; improved cycling and pedestrian crossings at intersections; and improved sidewalk on the North side, and new multi-use path on the South side, of Old Church Road from Airport Road to Marilyn Street.

The Town of Caledon’s study has already begun and is anticipated to be complete by early 2023.
