Jobs Caledon will host a career talk about the broadcast journalism field next Thursday (Aug. 28) from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
It will be presented by Anthem Media Group (AMG)’s on-air personality John Ramdeen and Senior Editor Derek Swanton from network channel, Fight Network.
Ramdeen and Swanton will discuss their typical days and include an overview on how a news story is first conceived to how it ends up on air for viewers to watch. They will talk about how technology has changed how broadcast journalism is delivered to viewers, and the skills and education required to work within this dynamic profession.
AMG is a global media platform which has acquired many sport-related programs to meet their target audiences. AMG acquired Fight Network in 2011. Currently, Fight Network is the only Canadian 24-hour combat sports station, and has recently branched out to include new on-air programs. One is Fight+Music, where musicians are interviewed about combat sports and its relationship to music. Another new program is The Shift, which discusses fight-related movies and video games, and recently included travelling to California for the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con.
Ramdeen has been working in the media industry for more than 10 years and currently hosts Fight Network’s original program, 5 Rounds. Being knowledgeable about every aspect of broadcast journalism is an asset in the business, including volunteer work. “I began as an unpaid intern and worked my way up the ladder over the years to eventually end up in the role of host/reporter,” he said.
Swanton has been working at Fight Network for more than four years as a senior editor, producer and camera operator. More recently, he has been producing and interviewing various musicians for Fight+Music.
“If you love TV and would like to do more than watch, come and check out our presentation,” he said.
