Shawna Caspi was sent off with a standing ovation after her recent performance at CrossCurrents Cafe.
Performing solo with excellent folk-guitar accompaniment, she sang mostly songs she had written and composed herself. Her lyrics are well-written, socially aware and deeply Canadian. So, when she jokingly compared about frequent comparisons to Joni Mitchell, there may have been a germ of truth in the comparison.
Caspi is a mighty singer, a fingerstyle guitarist, a story sculptor and a truth teller. She performs solo, but there’s a whole band under her fingertips. She has toured across Canada and the U.S.A. and believes in poetry and the power of one person and one instrument, accompanying herself with a remarkable lyrical fingerpicking guitar style.
