Record number of riders at 5th annual Velocity Ride in Support of Caledon Seniors

Nearly $70,000 raised from ride as of press time

Everyone from local cycling legends to brand-new riders put their pedals to the pavement for a good cause last Saturday.

In the morning on June 17, cyclists gathered at Caledon’s Town Hall in Caledon East to participate in the 5th annual Velocity Ride in Support of Caledon Seniors. The ride is hosted each year by Caledon Community Services (CCS) to raise money for its programs that help Caledon seniors age in place and increase their quality of life.

This year, a record number of riders participated in the ride: 145.

Whether they took on the family-friendly 10-kilometre journey, 100-kilometre expert expedition, or something in between, participating riders got a commemorative t-shirt, lunch, refreshments, and even a free ice cream coupon.

CCS’ Chief Development Officer, Mariia Kupriianova, said it was a fantastic day and she was so excited to see the record number of riders in attendance. She said it’s been awesome to see the Velocity Ride grow and become more successful over the years.

“Our community has really stepped up to raise an astonishing amount… this is definitely a record,” said Kupriianova. “These funds will support our seniors, the essential health and wellness programs, accessible transportation and respite care.”

CCS’ CEO, Geraldine Aguiar, said Caledon is a community that really cares about its seniors.

“We’re all here to support them,” said Aguiar. “There’s seniors choosing between medication and transportation, utilities and food. Anything an organization like ours can do to help, we will.”

At the ride, awards were given out for several categories such as top fundraising team and youngest rider.

This year’s top fundraising team was Ted’s Terra Cotta Trailblazers, who raised $7,034.84. This team was the 2022 top fundraiser as well. It was led by Ted Webb, 90, who also ended up being the 2023 event’s top male fundraiser.

“I love riding in Caledon,” said Webb in a short address to the crowd at the ride. “I have a secret for you: keep on cycling and you’ll live as long as I have.”

The top female fundraiser this year was Anne Thompson, who fundraised for the event alongside her husband, former Caledon Mayor Allan Thompson.

Anne said supporting CCS through the Velocity Ride was an easy choice, knowing the great services it provides for seniors. The Thompsons participated in the ride themselves, enjoying the nice weather and conditions on the Caledon Trailway.
