A fundraising event is being planned for Nov. 23 to benefit the athletic and Regional Arts programs at Mayfield Secondary School.
Called Fall Down Laughing, it will be put on by the Mayfield Music Parents’ and Mayfield Athletic Parents’ Associations and held at the Brampton Fairgrounds.
Letizia Pottier, chair of the Music Parents’ Association, reported the event will start at 7 p.m.
It will feature two comedians from Yuk Yuk’s, a performance by the local Clay Hills Band, a silent auction, food and dancing.
Both parent committees believe strongly that tax dollars are not giving students what they deserve, Pottier stated.
“Fees for sports teams are just skyrocketing,” she declared, adding there is a fear that being a part of a sports team will become “an elitist privilege.”
She pointed out that football players at Mayfield were asked to pay $275 in team fees. Some families can’t afford expenses like that. As well, she observed that sports are sometimes the only thing that keeps a student in school.
The music program is a well-respected one in the Peel District School Board, and Pottier said they need funds to purchase the extras that students need to enrich their music experience. Pianos need to be replaced, and recording and performance equipment also needs to be updated.
Tickets for the evening are $50 each.
