Open House at Mono Mills will start Emergency Preparedness Week

May 5, 2014   ·   0 Comments

Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 4 to 10, is aimed at encouraging residents to be prepared to cope on their own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency while rescue workers help those in urgent need.
The Town of Caledon is reminding residents that the recent ice storm that hit the area just before Christmas turned people’s attention to the importance of being personally prepared, as many residents experienced prolonged power outages.
“Experience has shown that individual preparedness goes a long way to help people cope better, both during and after a major disaster. Get an emergency preparedness kit now. It can make a world of difference,” said Fire Chief Dave Forfar. “During Emergency Preparedness Week, I encourage you to take concrete actions to be better prepared. Please do your part.”
Localized emergencies, such as a blackout, a flood or a severe storm, can happen anytime throughout the year in Caledon. Being prepared also means knowing the risks specific to a community to help better prepare; practising a plan where the family would reunite if an emergency strikes; and preparing a home and vehicle kit to help cope for a period of time.
Caledon Fire and Emergency Services invites the community to join them to learn more about emergency preparedness. Visit www.getprepared.ca for more information on how everyone can make homes and communities safer places to live. Resources are also available at the local libraries and online at www.caledon.ca/fire
To help people get started in putting together a personal preparedness kit, selected items will be specially priced at the local Home Depot and Canadian Tire Stores from May 4 to 10.
Caledon Fire and Emergency Services will be holding special events in the coming days. They will include a car wash and open house this coming Saturday (May 3) at Mono Mills Fire Station from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will also be information displays set up at the Walmart store in Bolton May 8 and 9 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Home Depot store at 12760 Regional Road 50 in Bolton May 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Bolton Canadian Tire store at 99 McEwan Dr. May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
