Caledon Junior C Golden Hawks’ head coach Sandy McCarthy has confirmed he will return to the head spot on the bench for the 2014-15 season.
McCarthy joined the Caledon organization in 2013 after spending two years on the bench with the Alliston Hornets and leading that team to back-to-back Georgian Mid Ontario Junior C Hockey League championships.
As a coach, McCarthy has been popular with both fans and players, who respect his coaching style and his extensive experience as a former NHL player who lasted 11 seasons in the big leagues.
After ending the current season with a fifth-place finish in the standings, the Hawks bowed out in the first round, losing their quarter-final series to the Schomberg Cougars in five games.
While trying to instill a sense of discipline in the Golden Hawks, who have been notorious for leading the league in penalties for the past two seasons, McCarthy said that players on his squad next season will have to step up and follow his lead when it comes to spending time in the box.
“I’m going to give them another year next year, and come back with them so we’ll see if we can build off this year,” McCarthy said. “I’m not going to stand for any stupid, discipline penalties next season. Some of the guys that aren’t here this year, but will be next year, will learn that being undisciplined will have no place on the Caledon team, and that’s one step to being a winning team.”
