After careful consideration and with a heavy heart, I have decided not to run in the 2014 municipal elections.
My husband John and I have lived in this wonderful community for over 35 years. We have a great love and affection for this community and thus why the decision was so difficult to make. During my time as your Mayor, I have been adamant to defend the wants of our residents, while balancing the needs of our growing community. This past decade has provided me with a real sense of triumph and accomplishment. Triumph over those who use bullying tactics and extreme measures, which no public servant or their family should ever endure. Most would have walked away but we love this community too much.
I am forever grateful for the valuable teamwork from the members of council and staff at Town Hall. Working together, we have made a significant impact on our community; a legacy that will last. These accomplishments include the creation of an Economic Development Department that has truly aided in lifting the tax burden from the residential tax base. In 2004, the non-residential taxpayers were levied 12.7 per cent (or $2.48 million), by the end of 2013, the non-residential taxpayers were levied 18.25 per cent ($8,029,120). There was also the hiring of an Environmental Progress Officer and Municipal Energy Conservation Officer to continue Caledon’s pro-active approach to all things green; double ice pads in Caledon East; the Johnston Sports Park; Peace Park in Bolton; the permanent skateboard park; OPA 226 and the Town’s Growth Plan; Bolton GO Rail study; the creation of the Greater Toronto Countryside Mayor’s Alliance to give Caledon and other member municipalities a stronger voice at the province and much more.
Caledon is known as the Greenest Town in Ontario and the Safest Municipality in Canada. It is a community of communities and I have been extremely fortunate and honoured to serve as your Mayor. These past 10 years have been extraordinary.
Time with family and friends beckon as I begin this new chapter in my life. I will remain engaged, as those who know me well, also know that I am a believer in the motto “if you’re not part of the solution, your part of the problem.”
I appreciate the encouragement that I have received from so many to stay in the game, but it is time for a change. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the people who have assisted me over the years with their time, and their personal support. I could not have asked for more wonderful people who have supported me. Thank you very much.
Please know that I have not come to this decision lightly, and that I am forever grateful for everything.
