Mayfield Secondary School’s senior football team was enjoying a very successful season until the semifinal game last Thursday.
Mayfield, who had been undefeated to that point, were stopped 26-0 by their foes from Cardinal Ambrozic Catholic Secondary School in Brampton.
The two sides had faced each other during the season. “We were the only ones who beat them,” Head Coach Peter Zubchinsky commented the following day.
The coach was impressed with the record his men compiled over the campaign.
“We showed up on game day,” he said. “The kids put the work in where it counted.”
But the Ambrozic crew were ready for them, as Zubchinsky said they “were extremely well-prepared for us.”
The game wasn’t quite as one-sided as the final score indicated, as Zubchinsky said it was 7-0 at the half.
“They just dominated the ground game,” he said.
