Jobs Caledon will be hosting a guest seminar, Know Your Rights @ Work this coming Tuesday (April 28) from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
It will be at the Caledon Community Services offices in the Royal Courtyards at 18 King St. East in Bolton.
In her presentation, Sue Mortimer, executive director of the Labour Community Services of Peel (LCSP), will be discussing issues affecting workers in Ontario workplaces, including common workplace issues, laws, an introduction to workplace rights, how to deal with workplace problems and where to access help. A practice scenario will also take place.
LCSP in Mississauga has been offering labour-related services to the Peel community for more than 35 years. There are two main programs that workers could access. The Help Centre is for clients who are experiencing income security issues regarding Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan, Human Rights and WSIB. Additional services include completing paperwork and representation at tribunal, as needed. Know Your Rights at Work is mainly delivered at various agencies to their clients, and beginning in May 2015, one session per month will be held at the LCSP Main Office.
Mortimer has been employed with LCSP for 30 years, and up until recently, held the position of Labour Director. In her current role as executive director, she has been facilitating the Know Your Rights @ Work workshops since October.
She pointed out a lot of people do now know what their rights are in the workplace, and are also not aware of the laws in place to protect them. “In some cases, the employer takes advantage of them for this reason,” she said.
