IMPAIRED DRIVING CHARGES

Officers from the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged four drivers with impaired operation over this past weekend.

“The first incident occurred on June 11, 2022, at approximately 4:17 a.m., when an officer conducted a traffic stop on Innis Lake Road near Old Church Road,” say Police. “Grounds were formed that the driver’s abilities were impaired and subsequently made an arrest for impaired operation. The driver was then transported to the Caledon OPP Detachment where breath tests were conducted.”

As a result of the investigation, Stephen James, 37, of Brampton was charged with:

Operation while impaired – alcohol

Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The charges have not been proven.

“Shortly thereafter, at approximately 4:41 a.m., Caledon OPP was alerted of a driver sleeping in a vehicle on Highway 50 near Hopcroft Road. Officers attended and formed grounds to arrest the driver for impaired operation. The driver was then transported to the Caledon OPP Detachment where breath tests were conducted.”

As a result, Michael Raykha, 32, from Michigan, was charged with:

Operation while impaired – alcohol

Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The charges have not been proven.

“At approximately 11:58 p.m., the third incident of June 11, 2022, occurred when a vehicle was stopped for speeding on Highway 10 near Charleston Side Road. During the interaction, the officer suspected the driver’s abilities to be impaired. The driver was asked to provide a breath sample into an Approved Screen Device. As a result, the driver was arrested for impaired operation and transported to the Caledon OPP Detachment where further breath tests were conducted.”

Christa Cromwell, 39, of Brampton, was charged with:

Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Speeding

The charges have not been proven.

“On June 12, 2022, at approximately 8:35 p.m., officers responded to a vehicle into the ditch on Mississauga Road near King Road. Grounds were formed that the driver’s abilities were impaired and subsequently made an arrest for impaired operation. The driver was then transported to the Caledon OPP Detachment where breath tests were conducted.”

Balaji Ravi, 48, of Mississauga, was charged with:

Operation while impaired – alcohol

Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The charges have not been proven.

The four above accused are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on August 25, 2022, to answer to the charges. Their driver’s licences were suspended for a period of 90 days and vehicles were impounded for seven days.

MONO DRIVER CHARGED

Members of the Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a person with impaired operation after a traffic complaint.

“On June 7, 2022, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Dufferin OPP received a traffic complaint of a possible impaired driver in the area of Riddell Road and Centennial Road in the Town of Orangeville,” say Police. “A quick-acting Dufferin OPP officer was able to locate the vehicle and driver in the Town of Mono. The officer commenced an investigation into the traffic complaint, which led into an impaired operation investigation.”

As a result of the investigation, Kendra Neil, 28, from Mono has been charged with:

Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80 plus

The charges have not been proven.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville, in August of 2022, to answer to the charges. The accused’s driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded for seven days.

“The Dufferin OPP reminds motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs. Use a designated driver, cab, rideshare, public transit or stay overnight. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impair your ability to make sound judgements. One bad decision could destroy or end your life, destroy or end the life of another person and leave countless people heartbroken.”

If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan to not drive. Instead, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi or public transit, or come up with another plan that takes impaired driving out of the picture.

COMMERCIAL VEHICLE BLITZ

Members of the Nottawasaga Detachment traffic unit of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) launched a one-day commercial motor vehicle inspection initiative in Alliston.

Commercial motor vehicles, due to their size, weight and loads, have increased potential of causing serious motor vehicle collisions. Mechanical fitness, driver fatigue, improper licencing and/or driving behaviours are contributing concerns.

Over the course of the day, 23 vehicle inspections were performed which resulted in seven vehicles taken out of service for equipment repair issues. Two vehicles had their plates seized for major safety infractions.

In total, 47 Highway Traffic Act charges were laid. The infractions included overweight vehicles, brake defects, equipment malfunctions, expired annual inspections and insecure loads.
