Mary and Gary Haslett received Heritage Caledon’s Award of Excellence June 18 for their dedication to restoring their designated heritage home in Melville.
Presented as part of the festivities at Heritage Caledon’s 10th annual Heritage Soiree, the award recognizes an individual or group showing exemplary effort in preserving or promoting Caledon’s heritage. The Hasletts were perfect candidates as they have put tireless efforts into saving their once-deteriorating 1850s Georgian farmhouse, which has been returned to its original splendour.
The stately Georgian house, known officially as the Mitchell-Haslett House (named after Scottish settlers Sarah and Alexander Mitchell, who built the home in the mid-19th century) had suffered from years of neglect by the time the Hasletts purchased it in 1995. Seeing potential in its “bones,” the Hasletts fell in love with the old beauty and began their restoration odyssey.
Heritage Caledon has been able to provide some financial assistance to the Hasletts since 2006, when the Designated Heritage Property Grant program was established. The program was designed to help property owners with the maintenance and upkeep of these important heritage properties and resources.
