Second annual Ghostly Greenhouses event being held at Davis Family Farm in Caledon East
By Zachary Roman
A visit to Davis Family Farm might look a little different than you’d expect this coming weekend.
That’s because they’re hosting the second weekend of their second annual “Ghostly Greenhouses” event.
Co-hosted by Sean Davis and his family along with Gillian and Adam Maramieri, the family-friendly event is a great way to celebrate Halloween and to support two charitable organizations close to the families’ hearts: Cystic Fibrosis Canada and the Canadian Celiac Association.
Running this past weekend, and again on Friday, October 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, October 29 from 5 to 9 p.m., Davis said Ghostly Greenhouses is a fun, family-friendly way to celebrate all things ghoulish.
This year there are three greenhouses — up from two in the inaugural year — all decked out as haunting Halloween halls. Families can walk through the greenhouses at their own leisure, following a path filled with ghosts, goblins and ghouls, said Davis, adding that “some people have so much fun the first time through they enjoy the adventure a second and even third time.”
He explained the event is suitable for children of all ages. Kids under the age of three are free, and admission is $5 with all proceeds benefiting the two charities mentioned above.
The greenhouse admission times reflect the two families’ commitment to making the event accessible to participants of any age.
“By starting the event at 5 p.m. on Saturday, children who might not feel comfortable going through in the dark can still enjoy all the features, without the ‘scary factor’ of being in the dark,” said Davis. “For older kids, coming after dark will just enhance the experience.”
Davis said the over 200 people who attended last weekend had a great time and that everyone is gearing up for even more people to attend this weekend. Custom candles designed specifically for the Ghostly Greenhouses event will be available, with all proceeds from them again supporting Cystic Fibrosis Canada and the Canadian Celiac Association.
Davis explained each greenhouse has a specific theme for guests to explore. He shared that his own kids, when a little younger, preferred to enjoy the event during daylight hours but now they not only love the dark but are actually participating in the event — as are Gillian and Adam’s two sons.
“They have a blast in there,” he said.
The Hurontario Street Brampton location of Swiss Chalet is sponsoring Ghostly Greenhouses by providing a coupon to every family who attends for one free kid’s meal. In addition, a number of local Caledon businesses have helped support the event by sponsoring headstones, and Davis said kids have been having fun spotting these grave markers along the Ghostly Greenhouse paths.
