Foley thanked for clarifying Canadian Tire issue

July 26, 2013   ·   0 Comments

I have been waiting months to see a clear explanation of the Canadian Tire proposal for Caledon, and I want to thank Regional Councillor Patti Foley for bringing balance to the situation.
Undoubtably, there will be citizens who find fault with any approvals for this project, but at least we now have a comprehensive account of the thinking that went into the process. Foley outlined the history of the issue, and the industrial, economic, environmental and traffic concerns with absolute clarity. That is what is known as transparency and accountability.
Most interesting was her historical note that all members of the previous council voted in favour of the 620 acres being used for industrial lands, and they all voted in favour of this “Option 1.” Therefore, no previous councillors should now be grandstanding their opposition to this project. We elected our past and present councillors to make these decisions; both past and present councils have approved this project. Our role now as citizens is to ensure that Canadian Tire lives up to its obligations to conduct their business according to their highest standards and our bylaws and to let council, present and future, know if they are not being good business members of our community.
Thank you, Councillor Foley, for your explanation. This is exactly the kind of clear and well-reasoned thinking that we should be expecting from all of our elected representatives.
Skid Crease,
Caledon
