Caledon council is calling on Peel Region to designate a section of Airport Road in Caledon East a community safety zone.
Council Tuesday passed the motion put forth by Councillor Richard Whitehead without comment to seek the designation on the stretch between old Church Road south to the entrance to Caledon East Public School.
This is a safety measure aimed at addressing concerns in the community, and reducing the danger presented by increasing of traffic and pedestrians numbers on the narrow road.
The motion mentioned several residential streets that connect directly to Airport Road, as well as driveways that empty out onto the busy street. With Caledon East Public School in the immediate area, there is concern about children walking by them. The road also comes to a steep grade in that area and some parts lack paved sidewalks, compounding the danger.
The community safety zone designation would tighten enforcement of speed limits on the stretch of road. Speeders who are stopped there will be subject to double the usual fine.
