Council should protect residents from diesel fumes

June 20, 2013   ·   0 Comments

The third public information meeting concerning the monstrous Canadian Tire trucking facility is over, and again, all participants are strongly against the proposed location in Bolton next to residential areas and a large school.
By now, the Caledon councillors should be well aware of the reasons why Bolton residents are so against it. Additionally, the warnings from the World Health Organization, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, International Agency For Research on Cancer and numerous other cancer agencies have pinpointed the horrible effects of diesel exhaust on the respiratory system, which will also cause lung and bladder cancer.
It’s a bloody shame that a large corporate company like Canadian Tire can get away with doing anything to dismiss the findings from the numerous agencies that warn us about the effects of diesel exhaust, to better suit their needs. They’ve gone so far as to hire their own environmental agency (RWTI) in the attempt to convince Bolton residents and Caledon council that the exhaust is not an issue. This makes no sense and Bolton residents are not stupid.
An indication given by a Canadian Tire representative that the warehouse is humongous in comparison to the trucking area, is an indication that the warehouse will be built to maximum size and that the number of trucks going to the facility will quadruple soon after.
Caledon council should, as one of the meeting participants suggested, conduct a referendum among the residents of Bolton, with the simple question as to whether or not we are in favour of having the trucking facility located on the West Side of Coleraine, between Healey Road and Holland Drive. This will close out any question about the resident’s position and it will draw attention to the fact that the council members have poorly represented their residents and show that it’s time for them to pack it in.
John Van Eeden,
Bolton
