Caledon natives starting first production

July 3, 2013   ·   0 Comments

Natural Progression Theatre, founded by two Caledon natives, are about to put their first production on the stage.
Stalled, a play by Phillip Psutka, will be opening tomorrow (Friday) at Theatre Passe Muraille Mainspace, at 16 Ryerson Ave. in Toronto (near Bathurst and Queen Streets).
The production is part of the 2013 Toronto International Fringe Festival.
Ashley Steeves reported she and her business partner Samantha Piper were both born and raised in Caledon, graduating from the Regional Arts program at Mayfield Secondary School in 2006. Steeves said she attended the University of Windsor’s BFA in Acting program, while Piper took the musical theatre program at Sheridan College.
She said they started their theatre company about year ago “in the hopes of supporting and developing new Canadian works and emerging artists.” They also wanted to pay homage to classical works, from ancient Greek tragedies and comedies to Shakespeare’s diverse canon.
The play is set in the public washroom of the Toronto Bus Terminal. The story follows Guy as he rushes into the washroom, only to become trapped there due a series of bizarre events and antics played out by some very wild and wacky characters. A cast of 10 performers play more than 30 roles in this chaotic romp, influenced by the absurdity of Monty Python, the comedic timing of Noises Off by Michael Frayn and the stock characters of Commedia Dell’Arte.
The play will run tomorrow (July 5) starting at 9:15 p.m., July 6 at 4 p.m., July 7 at 7:30 p.m. July 9 at 1 p.m., July 10 at 11:15 p.m., July 12 at 4:30 p.m. and July 13 at 3:30 p.m.
