To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA) is presenting We Remember: Stories of Service and Sacrifice.
The exhibit opened this week, with a new collection of artifacts. It will pay tribute to the many Peel residents who served Canada during the conflict.
We Remember: Stories of Service and Sacrifice showcases letters, postcards, photographs and other documents sent home to Peel during the war. Peel residents served on the battlefront, behind the lines and contributed to the war effort on the homefront. The exhibition shares the personal stories of local soldiers and families living through historic events.
“The events of World War I touched the lives of all citizens in many ways and played a significant role in Peel’s history,” commented PAMA Manager Marty Brent. “Through the We Remember: Stories of Service and Sacrifice exhibition, we pay tribute to the efforts of these brave men and women and their influence on communities throughout Peel.”
For many soldiers, serving in the war was their first time away from home. Writing and receiving letters was a source of comfort and a way to stay connected to their friends and family. The exhibition follows the lives of several soldiers and their friends and family back home through their postcards and letters. The letters and artifacts on display belong to the Archives and Museum collections at PAMA. As well, the exhibition features items on loan from the Lorne Scots Regimental Museum and the Royal Canadian Legion: Major William Dwight Sharpe, Branch 15.
The We Remember: Stories of Service and Sacrifice exhibition will remain on display for the rest of the year.
Operated by the Region of Peel, PAMA is at 9 Wellington St. E. in Brampton. Visit pama.peelregion.ca to learn more.
