New Library branch dedicated to the memory of Caledon artist Cory Trépanier

With the opening of the expanded Caledon East Community Complex came the grand opening of Caledon’s newest library branch.

On September 16, the Caledon Public Library (CPL) welcomed residents to its new Caledon East branch, the Cory Trépanier Creativity Studio.

The branch is located in the Complex at 6215 Old Church Road and has full-service hours. CPL CEO Colleen Lipp said the branch is the perfect response to the growing needs of the Caledon community.

The branch has collections for kids, teens and adults. There’s space for residents to bring their own computers to work or study, and the library has laptops residents can use, too. The branch has four meeting rooms, lounge chairs with tables, and a children’s area with floor space for programs.

In a media release, CPL communications manager Mary Maw said there’s no need to be quiet in the new branch.

“It’s a lively space where all can meet and chat with friends and do group work,” said Maw. “Though the branch does offer some study rooms for those who would like a little quiet.”

Tony Maxwell, chair of the CPL board, said libraries are becoming places where people create and share their own content in addition to retrieving it.

“The inclusion of the new Cory Trépanier Creativity Studio truly reflects CPL’s commitment to its values of innovation and creativity,” said Maxwell.

Cory Trépanier, after whom the new branch is named, was a Caledon resident and world-renowned oil painter, filmmaker and explorer. He was well known for his portrayals of Canada’s landscapes.

“Cory’s legacy includes encouraging artists to fearlessly follow their creative dreams, he urged his audience to connect with nature as a source of inspiration and self-discovery,” said Maw in a statement.

There are a variety of tools residents can use to express themselves at the new branch, such as 3D printers, a laser cutter, green screen, and sewing and embroidery machines.

“The studio celebrates the marriage of art and innovation,” said Maw.

Andie Trépanier, artist and eldest child of Cory Trépanier, said the studio will inspire and house the next generation of artists and makers in Caledon.

“I hope that Cory’s story and infectious optimism and sense of adventure will continue to inspire all who move through this space to explore both the natural beauty of Caledon and their own endless creative potential,” said Andie. “It’s so moving and meaningful to see Cory’s legacy featured in a communal space where his story can continue to inspire the next generation of creators.”
