The Caledon Hawks bantam AE hockey team traveled to Elora last Wednesday to face the Wellington Centre Fusion, winning a dominating game 6-1.
The Hawks played a complete game with relentless offence, firing 43 shots at the Fusion goal and putting up a strong defence, allowing only the one Fusion marker.
Opening the scoring was Quade McKinnon, taking a nice feed from Micheal Nunes early in the first period while on a power play. Later in the first period, Jared Eggengoor took a pass from Jordan Monaco and scored the second Hawks’ goal. Great forechecking play by forwards Daniel Marrano and Hunter MacGregor kept the Fusion in their end for most of the frame and off the score sheet.
The second period started off slow for the Hawks, but again they dominated with 17 shots on the Fusion. Jordan Lollino fired a point shot past the Fusion goalie after Ryan Harding and Jake Buth assisted by setting up the play with some great passing. The Hawk defence kept the Fusion’s offence at bay, however the Fusion managed to get a goal with a screen shot around Hawks goalie Micheal Doyle. Doyle, who was a surprise starter after Robbie Lockhart was scratched after a pre-game injury, was looking good for a shutout, playing a strong game and keeping the puck out of the net for the rest of the match.
There were 17 more shots fired by the Hawks in the third period, with Micheal Nunes collecting his first of two goals on nice assists by Buth and McKinnon. Nunes then scored his second from a great feed by Monaco. Ryan Harding completed the scoring with assists again by Buth and McKinnon. Defencemen Ryan DeFoa, Lucas Conte, Josh Coulson and Nicolas Eck shut the Fusion down to just one shot in the third to complete the total game played by the Hawks.
“The boys are buying into the system,” commented Coach Jeff Monaco, who was happy with the win. “They practised hard this week and now it is great to see the positive results. The team is starting to gel. We saw some good signs at the pre-season tournament and it is starting to come together. As I have said, we have a bunch of great boys who want to be here and play hard, and tonight really demonstrates that.”
Assistant Coach Mark Eggengoor agreed.
“We had a plan and the boys executed and the results speak for themselves,” he observed.
Unable to play were injured players Patrick Abbott and Rane Eggengoor, who according to trainer Rick Abbott, hope to back playing soon.
The team thanks sponsors Sandcastle Energy Systems, Coulson Contracting, Green Gables Farm, Fieldgate Homes, Greenpark Homes, Halton Forming, Cancian Construction, and Country Homes.
The Hawks travel to Guelph to play their Tri County Final opponents from last year, The Gryphons, Oct. 1. Then the Hawks are back home Oct. 4 at Mayfield Arena to host The Milton Winterhawks.
