Bocce played in support of Peel Memorial

Members of the Labourers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) Local 506 were on a roll recently at the chapter’s 23rd annual Nick Barbieri Charity Bocce Ball Tournament.
For the first time, proceeds from the tournament benefitted the new Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.
More than 150 participants, volunteers and fans came out to the LiUNA Local 506 Training Centre in Richmond Hill to play a few rounds of bocce and show their support for the new Peel Memorial. The event raised $50,000 for the new hospital, which is now under construction.
“On behalf of Osler, the Foundation and the future staff and patients at Peel Memorial, thank you to LiUNA Local 506 for making us the recipients of this year’s Nick Barbieri Charity Bocce Ball Tournament,” said William Osler Health System Foundation President and CEO Ken Mayhew. “Thanks to the amazing generosity of community leaders like LiUNA Local 506, construction on the new Peel Memorial is now underway. We couldn’t do what we do without their support.”
In between games, players and supporters snacked on a array of food and cheered on their fellow competitors. The well-fed crowd ended the day with a cheque presentation to the Foundation.
“This tournament is the first-ever bocce fundraiser for our Foundation,” said Mayhew. “This ‘first’ is supporting another ‘first’: the new Peel Memorial, which will be the first hospital of its kind in our community. Although work has begun on the site, we continue to need the support of health care champions like LiUNA Local 506 to turn our vision for the new hospital into a reality.”
