On Nov. 1, the Town of Caledon held the first Remembrance Day Service of the year at the Mono Mills Cenotaph, 35 Victoria Crescent.

The ceremony welcomed local residents, representatives from the Royal Canadian Legion, Dufferin–Caledon MPP Sylvia Jones, Caledon OPP and the Caledon Fire and Emergency Services Honour Guard.

Also in attendance were newly elected mayor Christina Early, Councillor Mario Russo, Councillor Nick de Boer, Councillor Tony Rosa and Councillor Heather French.

Those gathered watched as the ceremony paid tribute to the brave men and women who served and continue to serve their country.

Starting the ceremony, members marched along the cenotaph path before spreading out for those in attendance to see.

The Last Post was played and was followed by two minutes of silence to honour and remember the fallen.

During the ceremony, the names on the front and back of the Mono Mills Cenotaph were read out loud to acknowledge those who served and lost their lives.

“Erected to the memory of our honoured dead and those who carried on by the village of Mono Mills and Vicinity” reads the front of the cenotaph, along with the names of soldiers from 1914 leading up to 1953.

Once the names on the cenotaph were read out loud, bagpipes played The Lament and Amazing Grace for those in attendance.

Towards the end of the ceremony, three separate wreaths were placed in front of the cenotaph.

MPP Jones placed the first wreath, Mayor Early and a councillor placed the second wreath, and Royal Canadian Legion representatives placed the final wreath.

There will be many Remembrance Day ceremonies taking place across Caledon both leading up to and on Nov. 11.
