Wolfpack football is back for another exciting season on the gridiron.
The Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School football squad is looking to build on last year’s strong season, when they lost to Erindale S.S. in the ROPSSAA Tier 2 Championship. Although a lot of players from last year’s team have moved on, a promising new group of players have arrived to carry on the tradition of excellence.
Even though the school population has decreased to less than 800 students, athletics are still strong at Hall. More than 65 students were on hand for tryouts for the varsity boys’ team, including enough Grade 9s and 10s to form a junior squad. This wealth of young talent bodes well for the future of the Wolfpack.
The varsity boys travelled down to Harold Brathwaite to take on the Blizzard Monday (Sept. 23). This game was supposed to take place last week, however, due to equipment problems with Brathwaite, the game had to be postponed. The Blizzard are actually using helmets from Hall and Sandalwood S.S., as they attempt to revive their program.
It was all RF Hall from the opening kickoff. The Hall defence, led by Jake Monk, Cameron Gardilcic and Brodie Lavoie, were dominant, shutting down the Blizzard offence for the day. Jordan Celik also had an interception that was almost returned for a touchdown.
On offence, quarterback Jake Smith led the Wolfpack, tossing touchdown passes to Connor “Gronk” Reiners and Sheldon Wright. Senior tailback Curtis Fillier led the charge on the ground, as the Blizzard couldn’t stop his powerful running attack. Grade 9 running backs Andre Gordon and Harold van der Veen also contributed to the unstoppable attack of the Wolfpack as Hall cruised to a 24-6 victory.
Hall’s next game is tomorrow (Friday) at Flectcher’s Meadows in Brampton, as the team aims to ensure that the Arrows miss their mark.
