A handful of Caledon Hawks rep teams took to the rinks of Richmond Hill over the weekend to get in some early action at the Richmond Hill Stars Early Bird Tournament.
The atom, minor peewee, minor bantam, bantam and minor midget A squads took on teams from across York Region and the GTA in round robin play, with both the atom and minor bantam teams reaching their respective semifinals before bowing out in close matches.
Atom opened the tournament Friday morning with a tough 6-1 loss at the hands of the Barrie Colts, before regrouping for a 5-2 win over the Quinte West Hawks later that night. From there, they rattled off two more victories Saturday, first besting the Mississauga Phantom Wolves 4-2 then the East Gwillimbury Eagles 6-3.
That set up a date with the Woolwich Wildcats in Sunday’s semifinal, who cruised through the round robin undefeated. Caledon lost a close one 3-1.
The atoms also opened their regular season Monday with an impressive 6-1 win over the Brampton 45s. All Caledon rep teams open their regular season schedules this week.
The minor bantams, meanwhile, also went 1-1 the opening day of the tournament. They took down the Whitby Wildcats 3-1 Friday afternoon, before falling to the Barrie Colts 3-2 that evening.
Two wins Saturday, 2-1 over the Uxbridge Stars and 2-0 over the Bradford Bulldogs, also pitted the minor bantams against an undefeated team in the semis, the NobleKing Knights.
NobleKing shut out the Hawks 3-0, and defeated Barrie in the championship later in the day.
