OPG should stop paying bonuses

August 19, 2015   ·   0 Comments

From where I sit, I always believed a bonus was something someone received when their work was exceptional, over and above what is expected, with very good consequences as a result of their work.
So, we now see the new boss being appointed to run the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for an annual wage of $775,000, with a chance that amount could double as a result of performance bonuses.
To that, I say, “Okay, if and only if you are prepared to be The Guy, The Captain, The Last One to take all responsibility for how this utility is run. Like the captain of a ship, the coach of a team, etc. All good — you win. But if there are problems — you loose, starting with no bonuses!”
So, keeping that in mind, we still remember just how messed up we all realized the OPG was last year and how the people running it even acknowledged they made a lot of mistakes, over charged a lot of people through Hydro One, etc.
So basically, to my simple way of thinking, win or loose, succeed or fail, the end result really did not seem to matter. The bonuses were coming regardless. Only in Canada. In some countries, these white collar bandits would be sent to jail.
