Caledon Bandits fall to 0-3 so far on the season

The Junior C Caledon Bandits are still searching for their first win of the 2015 season, one week into play.
After falling to the Wilmot Wild in their first game in front of a home crowd last Tuesday, the Bandits hit the road over the weekend, where they lost another pair to both the Six Nations Warriors and the Fergus Thistles.
In Six Nations Saturday, Brandon Covre earned his first start in net in a Bandit uniform. Unfortunately, it may be one he wants to forget.
Down 6-2 after the first period, nine unanswered Warrior goals in just over 12 minutes proved to be an insurmountable deficit, despite two quick goals by Austin Heughan. Heughan has been the lone bright spot on the Bandits’ roster so far this season, leading the team with nine points.
The game ended mercifully 20-6, after a third period in which Caledon slowed down the Warriors offence while netting three goals of their own.
It was another tough challenge for the Bandits facing the Thistles Sunday, losers of only four games in the 2014 season and a perennially tough opponent.
Managing one goal or less in the first period for the third straight game, the offence seemed to click while down 4-1 midway through the game. The line of Heughan, Brad Wilson and Chris Dimartino took advantage of a five-minute powerplay after a nasty high stick, when Wilson scored two goals thirty seconds apart.
With the powerplay just ended, Heughan knotted two of his own within just over a minute of each other. All four goals came a three-minute span, vaulting the Bandits ahead 5-4.
But another defensive collapse caused an onslaught of goals-against once again, with Fergus heading to the second break up 8-5. The final score was 12-7. The Bandits head into the second week of play with the second-highest goals-against in the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League.
Heughan once again led the way for the Bandits with a hat trick, along with Wilson who potted one of his own.
Caledon faced another team looking for its first win of the season in the Mimico Mountaineers at home Tuesday (results not known at press time). It’s a chance for the Bandits to get back on track offensively, as the Mountaineers have given up almost 40 goals in their two games so far this season.
Those willing to make the trip can see the Bandits face the Vets in Shelburne Friday.
