Woman Abuse Prevention Month starts tomorrow

By Bill Rea
November will be Woman Abuse Prevention Month in Caledon.
Town council agreed to proclaim the month at their meeting last week at the request of Family Transition Place (FTP).
Stacey Tarrant, manager of development and community relations with FTP, appeared before council last week with some sobering statistics.
She said about 67 per cent of Canadians know a woman who has been the victim of physical or sexual abuse.
“We need both men and women to unite,” she asserted, stating that part of the observations of the month will include the symbol of a purple scarf. People are being asked to wear them throughout November, and up to Dec. 6, which is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
She also said there will be a vigil that day at the Albion-Bolton branch of Caledon Public Library.
The motion passed by council stated observing the month provides opportunity to raise awareness of the issue. It also stated that for every 100,000 married, common-law or separated women in Ontario, there are 29 in shelters seeking escape from domestic violence, and one in three Canadian women will experience sexual violence in their adult lives.
