Visit PAMA in May to explore diverse artistic expression

During May, the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA) is welcoming three exciting exhibitions that showcase various mediums and processes used by emerging and established artists.
Visitors will be able to explore works of featured artists and their use of painting, drawing, photograph and mixed media.
Art gallery exhibitions include Paint and Process, which runs until May 25, with an opening reception this Sunday (May 4) at 2 p.m. Brampton artist Karen Darling focuses on the artistic process behind her completed paintings in the exhibition. Darling uses a unique method that experiments with the use of wax, paint and environmentally-friendly stone paper as the foundation for this new body of work.
Another exhibition is entitled Photography in the Time of Digital Disenchantment, and it runs from Sunday (May 4) to July 6, with an opening reception Sunday at 2 p.m. and a talk by Guest Curator Peggy Taylor Reid at 2:30 p.m. Digital photography changed the nature of taking pictures, and created a saturation of images in electronic and social media. It also created a distance from the historical tradition of the photograph as a physical object. The artists featured in this exhibition attempt to re-establish this link by humanizing the photographic process. Artists include Dianne Bos, Virginia Mak, Zach Nader, Rob Canali, Elizabeth Siegfried, Brea Souders, Osheen Harruthoonyan and Sarah Anne Johnson.
As well, there's an exhibition called Legacy: David Somers and PAMA's Works on Paper Collection. It will run from May 11 to Aug. 25, with a talk by Guest Curator Judy Daley June 8 at 2 p.m. David Somers, curator and manager of the Peel Heritage Complex (now PAMA) from 1989 to 2009, was instrumental in shaping the direction of the organization, in particular its outstanding collection of art. Before his untimely death in 2009, Mr. Somers established a Works on Paper Endowment Fund to ensure the collection would continue to grow in this key area. This exhibition highlights the diversity of PAMA's Works on Paper Collection and pays tribute to the many artists and donors who continue to support its growth in honour of Mr. Somers.
PAMA is a place to explore and learn about Peel Region's culture and heritage, as well as use conversation, questions and stories to help make new and fascinating connections to the surrounding community.
Operated by the Region of Peel, PAMA is at 9 Wellington St. E. in Brampton. Visit pama.peelregion.ca to learn more.
