Use ‘common sense’ in sex educationI am a senior, and I have some problems understanding the new sex education curriculum. Perhaps I should go back to Grade 8 to learn what are the six genders. Honestly I only know two. I am not homophobic, and I don't discriminate, but it worries me. If there are really six genders, then every government form will have to be changed from the old male or female, and that will be a huge expense for our shaky economy. Teaching the facts is education. Teaching current ideologies is brainwashing. I agree with teaching the kids the health aspect of sexual life, the danger of sexually-transmitted diseases. But don't burden my grandchildren with the decision making of sexual orientation. They have a choice for their future occupation. For that they have to study and try out different activities. But to handle sex the same way, and try all six variations, would put their mental health in danger. In common sense, just teach them they are boys and girls, developing into adults. They will have a role in their family and society. If some of them are different, just accept the fact, and accept them, as they are just as important a part in society. Keep the sexual preference in the bedroom, but don't try to convert everyone to your taste. In the lower grades, I would like to see moral education. To learn about bullying in Grade 4 is too late. Since religion as a subject was abandoned, unfortunately the morality went with it. In Grade 1, kids should learn that we are Canadians, we are equal. We might be of different origin, color, religion, sex, physical or mental capacity, but we don't discriminate and we don't bully! We accept our Canadian mosaic, we help each other and we try our very best individually. Teach discipline, and teach to say “sorry.” Don't be afraid of the words “shame” and “conscience.” They are great teaching aids. Teach the respect of property, be it possession, body part, community, school or public land. Vandalism costs a lot — nip it in the bud! I urge every parent to think it over, write their opinions, fears and suggestions. Don't just swallow everything in the name of political correctness. Enough is enough! Ilona Kenedi, Bolton |
