Town to revisit nuisance vibration bylaw

Staff to update bylaw and bring it back to council on September 10

The Town of Caledon is looking to reintroduce a nuisance vibration bylaw.

At Caledon Council's July 24 meeting, Mayor Annette Groves introduced an urgent business motion to add a nuisance vibration bylaw to the meeting agenda to be voted on for approval.

“An absence of a Nuisance/Vibration By-Law has been detrimental to the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Caledon… and urgently needs to be reinstated to protect residents' health, safety and welfare,” reads Groves' motion.

In 2019, Caledon Council repealed Caledon's nuisance vibration bylaw, which was first implemented on March 18, 2008.

Councillors supported bringing a nuisance vibration bylaw onto the July 24 meeting agenda.

Town staff then said they would like time to review and strengthen the bylaw before Council approval, and said they could have it back to council on September 10. Councillors supported referring the bylaw to staff so they could complete that work.

Caledon's former nuisance vibration bylaw banned creating any vibration with a frequency, intensity, or strength would disturb residents between 7 p.m. in the evening and 7 a.m. in the morning on weekdays and between 5 p.m. in the evening and 9 a.m. in the morning on weekends and holidays.

The bylaw allowed for fines of between $500 and $50,000 for those convicted of a first offence and $500 and $100,000 for those convicted of second and subsequent offences.
